Quanto più chiudo gli occhi, allora meglio vedono,
perche' per tutto il giorno guardano cose indegne di nota;
ma quando dormo, essi nei sogni vedono te, e, oscuramente
luminosi, sono luminosamente diretti nell'oscuro.
Allora tu, la cui ombra le ombre illumina,
quale spettacolo felice formerebbe la forma della tua ombra
al chiaro giorno con la tua assai piu' chiara luce,
Quando ad occhi senza vista la tua ombra cosi' splende!
Quanto, dico, benedetti sarebbero i miei occhi,
guardando a te nel giorno vivente,
quando nella morta notte la tua bella ombra imperfetta,
attraverso il greve sonno, su ciechi occhi posa!
Tutti i giorni sono notti a vedersi, finche' non vedo te,
e le notti giorni luminosi, quando i sogni si mostrano a me.

How would thy shadow's form form happy show
To the clear day with thy much clearer light,
When to unseeing eyes thy shade shines so!
How would, I say, mine eyes be blessed made
By looking on thee in the living day,
When in dead night thy fair imperfect shade
Through heavy sleep on sightless eyes doth stay!
All days are nights to see till I see thee,
And nights bright days when dreams do show thee me.
